5 Tips to help Define your Personal Style
Defining your personal style isn't the easiest task in the world. We're constantly bombarded with different images and standards on how we should look that it's easy to feel overwhelmed and reach for the nearest sweatshirt. I've had my own struggles with my personal style over the years believe it or not! Having gone to school and worked in NYC, being the girl in the consistently shopping at Forever 21 instead of Net-a-Porter wasn't the most celebrated of choices. However, I've learned to just own it! I'm in my twenties, I don't have a giant income but I love fashion and If someone doesn't love my style that's okay! You truly can't please everyone, but as long as you feel your best that's all that should ever matter. I'm sharing with you some of my favorite tips to help you define your personal style!
1. Seek Inspiration
I absolutely love Pinterest for style inspiration, it's quite possibly my favorite source. It's so easy to use and amazing to see how many images pop up from your search! If I have a piece I'm not sure how to style or I want to do something different with it, I'll simply type "Boyfriend Jeans" (for example) into Pinterest and so many images will pop up. Doing this has given me countless styling ideas and I just pin the images I love the most! Another great source are of course magazines and bloggers! You don't necessarily have to buy exactly what you see in a magazine or on a blogger, but if you are drawn to the way they style make note of it and attempt it with pieces from your closet!
2. Closet Clean Out
Cleaning out your closet is beyond necessary to refining your style. I've held onto so many pieces that I should have let go of years ago! Its difficult to get rid of clothes, but in order to hone in on what works for you some things just can't stick around. I'm working towards a more minimalistic wardrobe so I've started purging some of the bright vibrant pieces I thought I loved. Take a hard look at your closet and start organizing it into keep, donate, and trash piles. If you haven't worn the item in a year that's a good sign it's time to let it go.
3. Shop Smarter
Shopping smarter is all about getting the most "bang for your buck"! I have no problem shopping at Forever 21, H&M, T.J. Maxx, and of course wearing vintage. Shopping this way has allowed me to stay within my budget but also create outfits that are unique and stylish. I admire all of the bloggers that get to wear Celine and Valentino to a casual coffee date, but it's simply not practical or even feasible for the majority of us. Don't get me wrong I like a good splurge here and there, but I put that money towards items I know will last me a long time like handbags, coats, and shoes!
Investing in statement jewelry, bags, shoes, and scarves can instantly add a unique edge to your looks! I love wearing vintage scarves around my neck or wrapped on a bag, its so simple but has been one of my style signatures. There are so many new jewelry options out there like dainty rings, ear cuffs, lariat necklaces that are the perfect compliment to outfits!
This may sounds so incredibly cheesy but I'm going to say it anyway, confidence is sexy! If you feel comfortable in what you're wearing it will show! I always trust my gut when I go to put something on, if I don't feel confident or I'm trying too hard to make it work I simply won't wear it. Don't focus on the size of your clothes or if you're not wearing designer, it doesn't matter! Style is your form of personal expression and you should always feel your absolute best!
